How to change IPv4 DNS server address to public DNS

Change DNS server address to public DNS in Windows 7 and Windows 8

(1) Right click on network icon in the taskbar and click “Open Network and Sharing Center”

(2) Click “Change adapter settings”

(3) Select the active/ connected network adapter and right click and select “Properties”

(4) Select “Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)” and click properties and then select “Use the following DNS server address”. (By default “obtain DNS server address automatically” is selected). When you select “Use the following DNS server address”, you can use the DNS address you want. Popular public DNS addresses are google DNS (8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4).

(4) Accept user account control and click continue.

Change DNS server address to public DNS in Mac OS

(1) Open System Preferences (either by clicking the icon on the dock or by clicking the Apple Icon and selecting it from the list).

(2) Double-click the Network icon.

(3) Double-click the connection you want to change DNS for. The connection you’re using now will have a green light next to it.

(4) On the connection properties window, click the DNS tab.

(5) Use the + or – symbols to add or remove the DNS servers your connection uses. Servers will be used in the order they are shown in this list.

(6) We recommend using the following server addresses:
8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4

(7) When you’ve finished, click OK.
(8) Now you’ll be back at the Connection properties screen. Click OK to finish.
