1. The Power of Starting With Why in Design: The Discovery Phase
Imagine walking into a new home for the very first time.
The couch feels too large for the living room. The kitchen lacks storage where you actually need it. One corner feels empty despite its potential to become your favorite reading spot.
The house may look beautiful at first glance, yet something still feels… off.
That’s exactly what happens when design begins without understanding the people it’s meant for.
The problem usually starts with skipping the discovery phase of the process.
Instead of asking who this space is actually for, the designer focused immediately on decoration, colors, and furniture.
Before we design screens, choosing colors and fonts, great designers begin by understanding why the product should exist in the first place. They seek to understand the people behind the screens, their goals, habits, emotions, and expectations.
Through research, interviews, and analysis, designers uncover valuable insights about user needs while also studying competitors and industry patterns.
Every insight gathered during this phase becomes a foundation for every decision that follows.
2. From Understanding Users to Structuring Their Journey: UX Strategy
Once designers understand users, the next step is to shape the experience around them.
Think of it as designing a city’s roads before constructing the buildings themselves.
Without clear pathways, people quickly become confused and overwhelmed.
The same applies to digital products. Designers begin mapping how users move through the experience step by step:
Where do they begin?
What should happen next?
How do they eventually reach their goal?
Every screen, button, and interaction should guide users naturally without forcing them to stop and think too much. This is where designers create user flows, sitemaps to organize how pages connect, and information architecture to structure content logically.

Regardless of the product size or maturity, a Design System is a set of standards, guidelines, and reusable components that ensure consistency and scalability across a brand’s digital products
It becomes a shared language between designers, developers, product managers, and marketing teams.
Instead of every team making its own decisions, everyone works with a unified system.
Today, Design Systems are no longer considered a luxury reserved for large companies. They have become a core foundation for building modern digital products.
6. Development: Turning Design Into Reality
This is the moment when ideas stop being concepts and become real products people can actually use.
Frontend and backend teams take everything that was planned, designed, and prototyped and transform it into a working experience.
Products become responsive across devices, optimized for performance, connected through APIs, and designed with accessibility in mind.
Animations and transitions help interactions feel smooth and natural, while security and technical stability ensure everything works reliably behind the scenes.
Even though development is highly technical, design doesn’t disappear during this stage. Designers often stay involved throughout development to ensure the final product remains aligned with the original vision and user experience.
7. Launch & Continuous Improvement: Products That Never Stop Evolving
Launching a product may feel like the finish line, but in reality, it’s only the beginning.
Once real users begin interacting with the product, the experience starts speaking back through behavior, feedback, and data.
Performance is monitored, bugs are discovered, and feedback becomes an ongoing source of insight. From that moment forward, the product is no longer a finished object; it becomes a living experience that continuously evolves.
Design Process in the Age of AI, and What Comes Next
With the rise of AI, a new layer is being added to the design process, not to replace the designer, but to extend what the designer can do.
AI can now generate layouts, suggest color palettes, write content, create prototypes, organize design systems, and even turn simple prompts into interfaces within seconds.
Tasks that once took hours can now be completed in minutes, allowing more time to focus on deeper creativity and problem-solving.
And just like every shift before it, it doesn’t remove the designer from the process; it can help during research by analyzing user behavior and patterns; it can speed up wireframing and prototyping; it can support developers by generating cleaner workflows and reducing repetitive work; it can even help teams test multiple ideas quickly before investing time into full production.
But despite all of this, AI still lacks something essential: human understanding.
It cannot truly understand emotion, culture, human behavior, or personal experiences.
The future of design will not belong to AI alone, or to humans alone, but to designers who learn how to work with AI intelligently.
Because even in a world powered by algorithms, people will always design for people.
The Reality of Applying UI/UX Design Process in Libya
While these practices have become standard across much of the global industry, implementing them within Libyan markets presents a different set of challenges.
As designers, we often notice that many digital products in public sectors and major institutions feel outdated or disconnected from the people for whom they were designed. Do we genuinely lack creative talent? Or is there a deeper issue hidden within the product lifecycle itself?
The real challenge often lies in the product’s environment, workflows, decision-making processes, and the market’s understanding of what UI/UX design truly means.
Here’s a closer look at the everyday realities of practicing UI/UX design in Libya:
1. The Designer as Both Creator and Educator
In Libya, your job rarely ends with design. You often find yourself stepping into the role of an educator. You need to explain the value of design itself. Managing local client expectations is an art form in itself, usually defined by three distinct hurdles:
- The UI vs. UX Confusion: Clients frequently ask for a “pretty design” while completely ignoring the user experience. As a result, designers spend significant time educating stakeholders about User experience, User behavior, accessibility, simplicity, etc..
- Competitor-cloning mindset: We regularly encounter clients who want a literal clone of a successful local or international app, rather than building a tailored experience that addresses the specific pain points of their users.
- Pricing the “Invisible Work”: In a market accustomed to paying exclusively for the final visual interface, it is incredibly difficult to price the foundational work that happens behind the scenes, such as user research, wireframing, and usability testing.
2. When User Research Becomes Optional
There is a common assumption that user research is expensive, a luxury step, time-consuming, or only necessary for large international companies. As a result, products are sometimes launched based purely on assumptions rather than actual user behavior.
3. The Digital Archive Crisis
Translating a traditional brand into a scalable digital product comes with its own set of local challenges.
It is surprisingly rare to find an official institution or major local company that maintains accessible, high-quality brand assets. As a result, designers often have to work with low-resolution, pixelated logos or spend valuable hours searching for or even recreating assets from scratch.
4. Lack of Design System: The Gap Between Design and Development
Without a proper design system, digital products quickly become visually fragmented.
New pages are added without structure, components behave differently across screens, and every future update becomes slower, more inconsistent, and increasingly expensive to maintain.
This issue becomes especially visible in large institutions and government-related projects, where multiple teams often contribute to the same product over time without unified standards or documentation.
While adopting this mindset in local markets remains a challenge, global and regional examples demonstrate that design systems are an essential foundation for trustworthy digital ecosystems such as GOV. The UK Design System, Saudi Arabia (DGA) & the UAE are investing heavily in digital standards and user-centered public platforms as part of their digital transformation strategies.
